Experience winter wildlife in Femund
Day 1: Welcome day
We coordinate collection from your pre-arranged arrival destination and drive you to the village of Elgå which is located on the eastern shore of Lake Femunden. You will then be driven to Båtstø Camping where you will take possession of your cabin. If you arrive by car, you can drive directly to Båtstø Camping in Elgå.
Welcome meeting and some relaxing before the supper at Femund fjellstue which is located just 300 meters away from the cabin at Båtstø.
During the evening you will be able to enjoy the view, the tranquillity and the amazing air that we have here at Lake Femunden.
Day 2: Dog sledding
You will enjoy breakfast in your own cabin. After a leisurely start to the day your guide will pick you up from your cabin and drive you to Femund Friluft’s premises in Elgå. The day commences in our welcome area with coffee brewed on the fire and information about the day. You will be taught how to greet our dogs and drive a dog sled. We will then go into the kennels where our high-spirited Alaskan huskies will be waiting for us. We select those dogs which will be going on the trip and harness up the teams. You can participate in as many of the preparations as you like, and you will receive help as you go along.
Once everything is ready we will release the brakes and speed off into the forest. We will be able to enjoy the silence which surrounds us and the power and eagerness of the dogs. We will be out for a total of 2-3 hours, including a break for lunch en route. We will serve pinnebrød(bread grilled on a stick over the fire). After we return to the kennels our dogs will receive some well-deserved food before we remove their harnesses and put them back in place. The whole excursion lasts for approx. 4 hours.
Your guide will then drive you back to Båtstø Camping where you will have the opportunity to take a shower and relax before supper.
Supper is served at Femund Fjellstue again.
You will spend the night in your cabin at Båtstø Camping where you will be able to enjoy the peace and tranquility.
Day 3: Moose safari
You will eat breakfast in your own cabin before your guide arrives to pick you up. The forests in the area are inhabited by many different animal species such as reindeer, moose, hares and foxes. During the winter the moose migrate down from the north to the good grazing grounds in the area. We will hike out into the forest where there is a good chance that we will see moose on this trip. Wearing snowshoes will enable us to navigate easily through the forest terrain, but we will always walk at a leisurely pace.
During the trip we will stop and light a fire for our lunch and we will have the opportunity to relax. We will use the fire to cook bannock bread – a type of bread used by North American trappers. Delicious bread served with jam.
This trip will take approx. 5 hours, including a break. Your guide will accompany you back to your cabin at the end of the trip. You will then have the opportunity to take a shower and relax.
Supper will once again be served at Femund Fjellstue. You will spend the night in your cabin at Båtstø Camping.
Day 4: Travelling with reindeer
Your guide will arrive at an agreed time after breakfast and drive you to Femund Friluft’s Northern Lights Sami tent. You will be installed there before we drive across the border to Storsætra in Sweden. You will then accompany local Sami herders and travel with their reindeer to a warm Sami hut where we will listen to some great stories about reindeer migration, drink coffee and enjoy light Sami refreshments. This is a fantastic experience which will provide you with a good insight into the local traditions.
At the end of the trip we will drive you back to Norway and Elgå. Supper provided by Femund Fjellstue will be served in the Sami tent.
After supper you will be free to spend the evening as your please, either inside the tent, where you can gaze up at the night sky, or sitting by the campfire.
